What I Work On

Low-Resource Machine Translation

Building translation systems for linguistically underrepresented languages , especially Manipuri and other Tibeto-Burman languages , using multilingual, unsupervised, and multimodal NMT approaches.

Key papers: English–Manipuri Semi-Supervised MT (ESWA 2022) · Multilingual NMT settings (NCAA 2022) · Unsupervised NMT (LoResMT @ AACL-IJCNLP 2020) · WMT 2020 system paper (EMNLP 2020) · Multimodal multilingual NMT (MMTLRL @ RANLP 2021)

AI for Mental Health & Healthcare

Developing LLM-powered tools for mental health support: therapy session summarization, patient history platforms, suicide risk detection, and culturally-sensitive chatbots. Research emphasizes privacy and real-world clinical utility.

Key papers: SAHAY suicide risk detection (IJCAI 2025) · SUKHSANDESH sexual health QA (IJCAI 2024) · MenstLLaMA (JMIR 2025) · Counseling session summarization (JMIR MH 2024) · Psychotherapy summarization (IEEE JBHI 2026)

Multilingual & Multimodal NLP

Investigating the transferability of large pretrained multilingual models (mBART, mT5) to low-resource Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman languages. Also exploring multimodal approaches combining text, image, and speech.

Key papers: Transferability of Multilingual Models (ICON 2021) · Speech-to-Text MT for Manipuri (ICON 2021) · Multimodal WSD (IJCSE 2021) · Video captioning (ICON 2021, Procedia 2023)

Large Language Models & Generative AI

Fine-tuning and deploying LLMs (LLaMA-2/3, Flan-T5, Mistral) for specialized domains using instruction tuning, PEFT/LoRA, and RAG. Work spans paraphrasing, style transfer, and deployment in production systems.

Applied work: Paraphrasing tool for Trinka (Crimson AI) · Style transfer with LLaMA-2/Mistral · LLaMA-3 patient history platform · MenstLLaMA-8B (open-sourced on HuggingFace)

About

Biography

Salam Michael Singh is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Manipur, where he has been teaching since July 2025.

His research spans natural language processing, low-resource machine translation, and the application of large language models to mental health and healthcare. He is particularly interested in building NLP systems for linguistically underrepresented communities including Manipuri and other Tibeto-Burman languages. And in developing responsible, privacy-preserving AI tools for real-world healthcare settings.

Before joining IIIT Manipur, he was a Post Doctoral Fellow at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi (Dec 2023 – Jul 2025), where he led the Mental Health & AI research thread at Prof. Tanmoy Chakraborty's group. He received his PhD from NIT Silchar in November 2023 on low-resource machine translation, advised by Dr. Thoudam Doren Singh. In between, he worked briefly as a Research Scientist at Crimson AI, Mumbai, contributing to their Trinka writing assistant.

His work has appeared in IJCAI (×2), and journals including IEEE JBHI, JMIR, Expert Systems with Applications, and Neural Computing and Applications.
